Something tells you your parents would have a heart attack if they knew you were a member of Root. You highly doubted that they would want you to return to their old job even as a regular Anbu member, but since they have died in mission, it was the only thing you thought you could do for the village after Danzo and his organization took you in.

You raised your fist to the door but hesitated to knock. You have never been summoned to Danzo's office on your own. In the past it had always been with others and you usually let your coworkers do all the reporting.

Taking a deep breath, you tapped on the door lightly.

"Come in."

You clenched and unclenched your fists before turning the door knob.

You had a bad feeling about meeting Danzo, but once you entered the room, you felt another presence watching you and spun around, your eyes narrowed as your hand reached for your weapon.

The stranger did not move at your hostile reaction. He was dressed in one long robe adorned with red clouds that practically swallowed him. A straw hat covered his face.

"Be at ease, this man means no harm to the Leaf village." Danzo walked up to you from behind his desk. You nearly shuddered when he put his hand on your shoulder.

The man stood up and towered over you, upon noticing the stranger's eyes, your breath hitched in your throat.

Sharingan!

But how could that be? Weren't the Uchiha's killed a while ago? The only Sharingan user would be the culprit's brother, Sasuke, and rumors has it that Kakashi might...

"I want to introduce to you, Itachi Uchiha." Danzo's voice interrupted your thought, stunning you with the turn of the event.

"Itachi..." you echoed softly, your voice muffled by the mask over your face.

What is the biggest traitor that murdered  his whole clan doing here in the village? And in Danzo's office no less?

"Itachi, this is (code name), she's a prodigy that once trained under the Hokage himself for a while." Danzo said as he nodded as the traitor, whose red eyes felt like they were penetrating through your mask.

You frowned when Danzo placed both of his hands on your shoulders and nudged you toward Itachi gently. You don't like to be touched, especially by that man.

"I won't be explaining the Itachi's circumstance, but know that he is still loyal to the village, and from now on, you will be his contact, meet him on the outskirts of the village whenever you receive his signal and report the information to me."

-

Transmitting intelligence became your priority as a member of Root, you were pulled from any missions that require travelling outside the village for more than three days and two nights. Instead, you spent your time sitting at home, waiting for the black crow to land on the branch of the tree right outside your window.

Itachi rarely reported any information about the organization that Danzo has been watching over.

Akatsuki... at least that what you thought it was called.

The organization had been quiet for the most part. There was little activity. The members rarely meet after the initial recruitment. Though you were surprised that even Orochimaru joined the group.

You hated the snake-like man with a passion, since you remember, from when you were a mere toddler, that it was a mission have to do with him that your parents never returned from.

But then, Orochimaru left the organization not long after joining. You were not told of the reason behind it, but you didn't really care since Danzo didn't pursue the subject, your superior... he smiled when you reported that Orochimaru left.

It was creepy.

-

The days spent waiting for Itachi's signal had been boring, but at least no news means nothing bad has happened so far.

That is, until Orochimaru appeared in the Leaf village again.

It was during the Chunin exam, you remember looking at the man, dressed in Kazekage garment, through the barrier set up by his subordinates. You were itching to take his life yourself but you knew he was not an opponent you could fight with at your current level of skills.

Turns out, you were right, for the Third Hokage himself was sacrificed in battle to protect the village.

Just when you thought things have quieted down now that the village is focusing most of its efforts on rebuilding structures destroyed by Orochimaru's reappearance, Itachi's brother, Sasuke disappeared from the village.

You signed as you perched on the window. Your mask sat on the window sill next to you. It's annoying to wear your mask it every day and every minute to conceal your face. In fact, you hardly see the sun, so your face is even paler than your skin, it's almost kind of chalky and you could only frown when you look at yourself in the mirror.

That's when you spotted a crow come flying toward you. You scrambled for your mask, only for it to shatter before you could touch it.

Lying amongst the pieces, was a kunai, you spotted the explosive tag hanging off the end and jumped out the window.

There was a loud boom and you could feel the heat and shock of the explosion on your exposed skin.

You landed on a branch a safe distance away and watched as your residence became engulfed by flame.

You did not have time to wonder why was this happening to you before you dodged, three shurikens whizzed by your ear, you could hear one of them snipping your hair as they flew by.

What is going on?

The croak of a crow caught your attention. It began to fly away. Out of reasons unbeknownst to you, you followed the bird even though you knew there could be a chance that it would lead you to a trap.

Another kunai flew by you and you had to change direction as the roof in front of you exploded into flame.

"Damn it, don't use explosive tag on the village buildings!"

You heard a familiar voice and risked a glance backward.

What you saw stopped you in your tracks, it was the two Root members that you always worked with when you went on missions before.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Upon hearing your voice, the two members stopped as well.

"(C-code name)? Is that you?" One of them questioned in uncertainty.

"Yes, it is." Your voice ran clear now that the mask is no longer there to muffle it.

Come to think of it, despite how many missions you've gone on with your comrades, none of you have ever seen each other's face, instead, you recognized people purely based on their voice since masks can and do change often for some members.

"You have to run," your other co-worker said in a rushed voice after looking around quickly, "I shouldn't be telling you this but Danzo no longer trust you, we were told to erase you."

"What?"

"Don't ask questions, just g-" The man's voice was cut off as his body shook violently. Then he fell off the roof, on his back, were multiple senbons.

"Shit!" The remaining shinobi cussed as he turned toward the direction where the senbon flew from, "run, (code name), I'll deal with them so get away!"

You hesitated, your friend yelled, "what are you waiting for? Go!"

That sprung you into action. You kept jumping from roof to roof, your breathing becoming more laboured as you tried to keep your mind from panicking.

You could feel a presence closely behind you, not wanting to chance a look back again, you moved even faster.

The crow circled over your head, leading you to your unknown destination.

When you got to the edge of the village, your eyes widened at the number of Root members perched on top of the defense wall.

Hurriedly doing a few quick hand sign in mid air, you made multiple clones going in different directions. You heard popping noises all around you as your clones were targeted and eliminated.

You winced as a shuriken embedded itself in your arm.

Biting your lower lip, you made more clones to distract your-would-be killers. There were simply too many of them for you to fight.

"Target that one! The one with shuriken in her right arm!"

You pulled the weapon out of your arm and threw it at the person who called you out. As the shuriken darted toward the person, you made shadow clones of weapon.

The man gasped and lost his footing. He fell off the tall wall and landed on the ground. He did not move after he fell.

But that was only one down, it was rather insignificant considering how many Root members were currently targeting you.

The crow above you croaked.

What happened next was confusing. Several Root shinobsi turned on each other and began attacking the person next to them.

There was massive confusion as shinobi tried to fight each other while all situated so densely in the narrow area that is the defensive wall. Colourful jutsu flew back and forth, but you did not have time to pay attention to them as you kept following the crow.

You managed to get past the wall, as you raced toward the forest path, you heard a shout.

"(Name), watch out!"

Your heart skipped a beat when you heard the familiar name that your parents had given you.

No one had called you that ever since you joined Roots and became part of the shadow that protected Konoha in secrecy.

Something heavy landed on your back and knocked the air out of you. You turned around just in time to see your comrade who had defended you earlier.

Multiple shuriken and kunai impaled his back. Warm liquid seeped through your cloth and your breath hitched as the mask fell away, revealing the face of the man you have worked with on many missions in the past.

Age had eaten away at his youthful face that you had remembered from your childhood, but you will always remember that face no matter what.

It was your father.

"D-Dad?"

You did not know tears had began to stream down your face until your father wiped them away with his thumb. He gave you a weary smile.

"Forgive me, sweetheart, I'm such a failure for a father that I could not recognize my own daughter's face. I see you have matured into a beautiful woman."

"It's ok, Dad, let's leave this place, you and I, together!" You began to try to get up and help him as well, but he stopped you just as you offered him your hand.

"I'm getting old," he said as his voice turned hoarse," go without me."

"No!" You screamed, tears clouding your vision again, "I just found you, I can't lose you again."

You father gave you a weary smile, "I'm sorry I faked my own death and left you to grow up alone. I thought it was for the good of the village, but..." he turned around to glance at the fighting shinobis at the top of the defense wall, "go find your own happiness, (Name). Whichever side you choose in this war, know that I'm proud of you."

"Dad..."

"There they are!" You looked up to see shinobi running toward you from the gate. A force propelled you backward and you realized your Dad has shoved you away.

"Now go!" He yelled at you.

Before you could retort, he pulled out a giant explosive tag ball.

You never managed to get to your father before you were blown backward by the force of the explosion.

Smoke and ashes fell around you, making it hard to see or breath.

You jumped when  something sharp poked you on the top of your head.

You looked up and realized it was Itachi's crow. It flew deeper into the forest.

With one last look at the village that raised you and gifted you with all your joy and pain, you left for your unknown future.

-

You must have been travelling for a few hours. The forest cleared as you continued to follow the crow. Soon, you arrived at a small clearing with a lake in the middle.

"Darn it! I lost the bird!" You cussed quietly, you frantically looked around the lake, your eyes searching for the bird that had led you to safety.

But you couldn't find it.

Driven by the hope that your weary eyes might have missed it, you walked around the body of water for a while and still couldn't find the bird that had led you here. As adrenaline from earlier died down, fatigue began to set in.

You sat down at the bank of the lake, hugging your knees to yourself.

You eyes burned, either from smoke, or from the sadness you felt at losing your father again when you were just reunited with him.

You were so absorbed in your thought that you did not notice two people approaching until a shadow loomed over you.

"Look, Itachi, there's a leaf ninja over there."

You felt cool air down the back of your neck and you whipped your head around, only to barely suppress a yelp as you were met with a frightening man with shark-like features.

He was wearing the same robe you saw on Itachi. There was a blue tinge to his skin. The fact that he's so tall and towering over you made him look like something out of nightmare.

"Samehada's been quite restless lately, I wonder if I should feed it," he muttered as he reached toward a huge sword on his back.

You wanted to get up, but found yourself unable to.

You close your eyes with a bitter smile, wondering if this would be the end of you.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to go see your parents now... Dad would be angry, wouldn't he?

You could feel the breeze as the sword swung toward you.

"Don't harm her, Kisame, she's my subordinate." You heard a familiar voice, your eyes snapped open and you saw Itachi walking up from behind the tall man. The Uchiha's face was emotionless as he studied you.

"Oh?" Kisame took a step back and peered at you in interest , "Itachi, I didn't know you keep pets-" He stopped mid sentence and narrowed his eyes.

"Looks like we have some extra guests here," you shuddered when you saw Kisame's pointy teeth as he grinned.

"I found you, you traitorous little fool."

There was a rustle in a nearby bush and several black shape jumped out.

Your eyes widened when you realized that Root shinobis had followed you all the way here.

"Aren't you forgetting us?" Kisame moved to stand in front of you.

Though you couldn't see the Root shinobis thanks to Kisame's towering stature, you could hear the leader's voice.

"Thank you for leading us to the Akatsuki members, (code name), we'll deal with you after we take care of them."

Kisame growled at not being directly addressed.

"Itachi, may I kill them?"

"Go ahead."

What happened next was fast. You were dazed as you watched Kisame cut down the Root shinobis as if they were made out of butter. Sometime during the fight, Itachi moved to stand beside you, but he seemed to have no intention to join the fight himself.

Soon, there was no one left but you three.

As Kisame wrapped his sword in bandage again, you heard Itachi speak.

"What will you do now?"

You looked up at the red eyes that looked down at you almost pensively.

"I don't know..." you replied in a small voice.

Truth is, just about everything in your life had been destroyed, you felt completely out of direction.

He extended hand toward you and you stared at it in disbelief. In all your past interactions with Itachi, you had the feeling that he isn't someone who would want unnecessary physical interaction.

"I have something in a nearby village I wish for you to do."

There was nothing warm about the way he addressed to you, yet, you felt something change in you, however subtle.

"I will do everything in my power to fulfill your wishes, my lord."

Perhaps just this time, you will let yourself go on a mission without the depressing belief that you are nothing but a disposable pawn.
I'm not really particularly going for romance here, but it's the beginning of something, no? :)
I don't own the characters, they belong to Naruto's creator. The picture was found here: www.wallpapermay.com/Nature/Sn….
